Nail courses – Joints of foot
The foot connects to the leg by the ankle bone. The ankle bone is composed of the malleolar extension of the tibia and fibula.
1.Ankle joint or talocrural joint
It can be found between the talus and ankle bone, its lateral ligaments are very strong (protects the ankle from sprain). It permits motions of plantar flexion and dorsiflexion (flexion-extension) since it is a so-called unaxial hinge joint. Standing on tiptoe allows only little side-motion.
It is formed by the talus, together with the calcaneum and the navicular bone. A completely separated unaxial joint (one is hinge, the other is ball joint) which permits side-motion of the sole (inversion and eversion) so that the foot can adapt to the unevenness of the ground.
Tight joint with minimal motions.

Metatarsal bones are joined to the toes by condyloid joints with elliptical surface.
Unaxial hinge joints.
